How he Met Tom: Mark's sister, Anne, was dating Tom's best friend. She knew Tom was trying to form a band so she introduced him to Mark.
In Concert: When in concert, Mark plays his own Fender Custom Shop Precision bass and Jazz bass; both are split into two Ampeg SVT-4 amps powering three Ampeg 810E cabinets. He uses a Shure wireless system and makes a fair number of mistakes. He also uses Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky bass strings, and Jim Dunlop Tortex .60mm picks, and pick holder on his mic. He uses Ernie Ball straps and Seymour Duncan quarter pound pickups for all his basses.

"Take it from me because I learned the hard way. Circumsissions are best left to professionals." -Mark Hoppus
